Holiness and intimacy

Early Old Testament visions of the heavenly court – God and the angelic hosts - included discussion between the prophet and God. Later visions, including our first lesson, with its picture of the ‘one of great age’, show an increasingly deep awareness of God’s utter holiness. Dialogue disappears. Yet Daniel’s vision contains a new element: ‘one like a son of man’. Early Christians identified the son of man with Jesus, helping them to hold together the utter holiness of God and God’s tender love for his people. Can I hold together God’s radical holiness and God’s desire for intimacy with me?
