St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Ephesians 4:11-13, Ps19A, Luke 9:9-13

If, as the saying goes, you can judge a person by the company he keeps, then it is little wonder that Our Lord’s choice of companions raised more than a few religious eyebrows. His inner circle, the first bishops of the Church, were, in human terms, a pretty motley lot. Even the leader Jesus appointed had told him to “leave me Lord, I am a sinful man”. All of which is most encouraging, because it tells us that it is not what we are that matters but what we can become by believing in and following Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
