Our Comforts and Pleasures

We could interpret today’s readings as requiring us to shun all of the comforts, satisfactions and pleasures that this world has to offer. But why would God create a world with such things if we weren’t meant to enjoy them? Jesus gives us the answer in Matthew’s Gospel “Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God’s saving justice ...” (Matt 6:33). It’s a question of priorities. We should be thankful for comforts, satisfactions and pleasures but they must never become our purpose in life. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God ...”
