St Martha, Disciple of the Lord

1 John 4:7-16, Ps:34, John 11:19-27

Distracted with all the serving

Martha owned a house where she lived with her brother and sister. She made Jesus welcome, and he obviously enjoyed their company. Martha enjoyed the talk as much as anyone, and was irritated if she missed any of it. Jesus administers a gentle rebuke when she criticises her sister. Every mother would sympathise with her, but the point is valid – hospitality is more than food and drink. It is about being present to the guest in different ways. If Mary had been in charge no one would have even got a cup of tea…
