Looking below the surface

How easy it is to judge by appearances. The centurion in today’s gospel was wiser than that. He was not a Jew, he did not share their religion, though he had taken the trouble to understand it a little. Calling for Jesus would have been a last resort, like calling in a witch doctor perhaps. Jesus, I suppose, would have looked shabby and dusty, just an itinerant preacher, but the centurion saw beyond that, he recognized the greatness and the authority in Jesus. Do I have eyes to see below the surface?
