Loved and protected

One of the things Jesus and St. Paul have in common is a passionate love and concern for their people. It shines through every word of both of our readings today. Jesus does not pray that his followers will be taken out of the world but that they may be protected from the evil one, and St Paul says much the same. So, once again, we are confronted with the fact that we cannot expect an easy or comfortable life, there is work to do. Our call is to reveal God to an increasingly cynical and godless world and to do this we need to know, as a reality, how much and how personally we are loved.
