Unlike a servant-slave, a friend who “knows his masters business” is charged to engage intelligently on behalf of the one who sends him/her. Jesus not only initiates friendship with us at baptism. He also sends us out, not as meek and voiceless slaves but as empowered, chosen friends whom he loves profoundly.
