Jeremiah 18: 18-20; Psalm 31;
Matthew 20: 17-28.

The price of greatness.

The mother of the apostles James and John, asks Jesus that her two sons may take pride of place in his kingdom. When Jesus asks the two apostles could they drink the cup of suffering that he would have to drink, they replied: “We can.” James was the first to die a martyr’s death. John was to live to a great age, and for him it was the constant discipline and struggle of the Christian life over the years. I hope that I am ready for either, as long as I follow Jesus wherever he may lead me.
