God gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5)

To follow Jesus and be “gentle and humble in heart” ( Matthew 11/29) is an ideal worth pursuing for stubborn and proud me. ‘Humble’ is a word which comes from the Latin ‘humus’, meaning ‘earth’, ‘of the earth.’ I am not flying high, but am down to earth, acknowledging the reality, the truth, about myself in the sight of God and of my fellows.

If I am praised, I say “Thank you.” If I am at fault, I admit it and apologise if necessary.

I want to affirm the reality of the situation. I pray for the grace to be humble, and be raised to the heavens with Jesus. (Matthew 23: 12)
