Tobit 1:3, 2:1-8; Psalm 112;
Mark 12: 1-12.

Works of mercy.

Tobit wishes to carry out two of the Corporal works of Mercy, feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, and ends up performing a third, giving the dead an honourable burial. Saints like John Chrysostom and Gregory the Great remind us that when we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs. When we “clothe the naked”, “visit the sick and imprisoned”, “give shelter to the homeless” we are paying a debt of justice. How will the poverty of Jesus and his concern for the poor impact on me today?
