A larger place

Love always takes us to a larger place,

you told me once,

to the orange chair by the window,

the scoop of sunlight on the white carpet,

the hymning morning,

the trees full of song,

the music wild with praise.

Love takes us to the people,

Merton’s people, who cannot be told

they are all walking around

shining like the sun.

Love takes us to the hill,

the bank of camelias,

where yesterday your voice was shaking,

heart prised open.

Love takes us to the silence of God

the great uncluttering,

a hand holding everything.

Love takes us to a great river

flowing on and on to where we cannot see.

So many voices on the water,

so much light in this large place.
