MM 50 Years Ago

From ‘Mostly about books’, by Pat Lawlor:

Collins, the publishers, are celebrating their 150th anniversary. They were the first to win a licence for printing the Bible. Production costs were then so low that they were able to insert this advertisement:

Holy Bible, Writ Divine –
Bound in leather, 1/9.
Satan trembles when he sees
Bibles sold as cheap as these.

From Māori Mission League Director, Fr Pat Cleary SM:

We celebrated Fr Te Awhitu’s silver jubilee on 22 November last year ... at the Ngāpuwaiwaha Marae among Fr Te Awhitu’s own Ngāti Hauā people.

To the surprise of many, the Jubilarian spoke at length in both English and Māori. For some time after a serious illness, Fr Te Awhitu was unable to speak, but with his own indomitable spirit he has recovered to a notable extent.
