Cardinal of the South Pacific

Our Cardinal’s welcome home in June was a triumph. His people paid a rare tribute of loyalty and love to a Father in God who despite his deep and obvious affection for them is yet reserved in manner.

Stimulating and uplifting was the splendour of the liturgical reception by the massed Bishops, led by the Apostolic Delegate and the venerable Archbishop Liston, at St Mary of the Angels. The public reception in the Wellington Town Hall provided a feast of oratory and music. It was expressive of how the already deep devotion of Catholics here to the Holy Father had been made more intimate by his attaching our metropolitan more closely to his person as a Cardinal.

The Cardinal was Peter T B McKeefry; the Apostolic Delegate was Archbishop Raymond Etteldorf.
