The Marist Family Newsletter Champagnat “an International Marist Journal of Education and Charism” was awarded the Bishop Phillip Kennedy Memorial Prize at the ACPA annual Conference in Sydney. The magazine is published by the Marist Brothers in Melbourne under the editorship of Br John McMahon.
One of the articles also won the inaugural award for Best Mission Coverage for an article written by New Zealand Marist Fr Mark Walls “From Mission to Ministry”

The Marist Messenger gained a Highly Commended Award in the Best Editorial Section with an entry on prison reform (August 2008). NZ Catholic was among the awards again, two for articles on controversial topics, and two for a very fine cartoon of the Holy Father arriving at WYD carrying a surfboard.
Tui Motu Inter Islands gained the top award for the original artwork of Donald Moorhead, as well as a social justice award from ARPA. Wellington’s Welcom won an award for a WYD reflection.
The other major award of the Bishop Phillip Kennedy Prize for Newspapers went to the monthly Catholic Voice from the Archdiocese of Goulburn Canberra.
The Australasian Catholic Press Association, now fifty years old, elected a new president, Mr Kerry Meyers, editor of Sydney’s Catholic Weekly, and a new Treasurer Richard Vella of the Opus Dei Information Office. The ACPA Conference also honoured five members with life memberships, including Mr Pat McCarthy of Auckland NZ. New Australian Life members are Dr Michael Costigan, Frs Frank Freeman and Bob Wilkinson, and Sr Mirian Lorenz S.S.PC.

At the ARPA Conference which followed on ACPA, the
Catholic Weekly was awarded the prestigious Gutenberg Award, which is ARPA’s top award. This followed on superlative coverage of WYD 2008. The speakers at both Conferences were of high quality, and it seems religious publications are increasing in quality and market share.
