John Baptiste Marie Vianney was born at Dardilly, near Lyons, France, in 1786. A late starter, he had great difficulty studying. Conscripted into the army, a series of events led to his being, effectively, a deserter until his younger brother was sent to serve in his place. Read more »

Jakob Gapp was born on 26 July 1897 in the Austrian Tyrol. After completing school, he entered Franciscan high school in 1910. Called to military service in 1915, he was wounded and received the silver medal of Courage Second Class. In 1918, he was interned as a prisoner of war in Riva del Garda and released the next year. The mother of Louis IX of France, Blanche of Castille, told him when he was still a child that she would rather see him dead than stained by a single mortal sin. He never forgot her words. Raised to the throne and anointed in the Rheims Cathedral at the age of twelve, he made the defence of God’s honour the aim of his life, particularly challenging the Albigensian heretics. Read more »

‘Personal prayer is essential for holiness’.
I once remarked to a Benedictine priest, ‘I was edified when I saw you praying for a half hour in the church, morning and evening’. He replied, ‘personal prayer is essential’. I am indebted to him for the quote, given above. His comment set me thinking, and after much reflection, I find that I wholly agree with him. I am convinced that personal prayer is essential for growth in holiness. This is the one point I wish to demonstrate in this chapter. Read more »

We are usually told that one reason He requested anonymity was that He did not want to be hounded for miracles because His mission was to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
